Colombo
The capital of Sri Lanka since 1883. This was an ancient harbor city used by Portuguese and Dutch for commercial purposes which later was converted to a major commercial city by the British. Today also it is used as the main commercial and industrial city in Sri Lanka and it is one of the largest harbor cities in South Asia nowadays. The population is around 2 million.
Important sites- President’s house (old queen’s palace) , Galle face, Viharamahadevi park (early Victoria park), the Town hall (Sri Lankan White house,160 yrs old), National museum, Gangarama temple and the museum, Hindu kovil (300 yrs old) , The Lotus pond theatre hall
Some of these depict medieval European architecture as they are built by British who ruled at that period.
Colombo is the most famous among tourists as it has high luxury international five star chain hotels and shopping facilities.
Elephant orphanage- Pinnawala
Sri Lankan elephants ( Eliphasmaximusmaximus) is a sub species of Asian elephants. It has been recorded that before colonial period there were 30,000 wild elephants in Sri Lanka. After about 200 years this was declined to 3000 due to overhunting. The present situation is a result of organizations formed by nature lovers & the government & the number of elephants has been raised over 5000 in next 30 years. This orphanage was established in 1978 starting with 5 baby elephants. Now it is recorded that there are more than 85 orphan elephants in this orphanage. This also gives shelter and protection for disabled elephants. The younger elephants which had been found motherless are bottlefed. 35 l of milk is given daily for each baby elephant & watching this feeding is allowed for the visitors.
Kandy
The last kingdom of Sri lanka. (14th AD to 16th AD) situated 500m above sea level distanced 116 km from Colombo. Temperature 15- 20’C at night. The population is over 200,000. This was made a colonial city during the British reign.
Most important sites-
The Temple of tooth relic- The old king’s palace where the most sacred tooth relic of The Buddha has been placed. Worshipped by millions of pilgrims annually. Daily pooja ceremonies are held in the morning , noon, evening and the night where anyone can take part. The Dalada perahara which is held for 10 days in between July and August full moons is the most special and attractive ceremony in Kandy where more than 300 decorated elephants, 1500 dancers , 500 drummers are participated.

Botanical garden- Kandy (area 60 hcr)- Named Royal Botanical garden. More than 350 varieties of orchids and numerous types of plants can be seen.
Matale
Situated in the Northern slope of hill country. A very famous area for spices for more than 1000 yrs. Many types of rare and valuable spices and herbs are grown such as pepper, cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, turmeric, cocoa etc.
Dambulla
An ancient rock temple situated in Dambulla. The way is a climb of about 100m. Consist of 5 ancient natural caves in a single rock. The first cave has a statue which is more than 2100 yrs old. Around 200 Buddha statues can be seen there & consist of glamorous wall paintings which belong to 16 AD.
Anuradhapura
The first kingdom of Sri Lanka (3rd BC to 12th AD) . Today it is very famous as an ancient ruin city which is also declared as a world heritage. Sri maha Bodhi ( the sacred tree of the Buddhists) , Jethavanarama (120m), Abayagiriya (112m), Ruwanvelisaya (100m) are the most important Buddhist religious places to be visited. Also the ancient tanks built by ancient kings depict the advanced irrigation technology of ancient Sri Lankans.
Pollonnaruwa
The medieval capital (12-14 AD).Built by kingVijayabahu. The most attractive site is the Galvihara temple which belongs to 12th century AD where 3 huge granite statutes of the Buddha can be seen. The king’s palace and the other ruins of ancient Buddhist architecture are eye catching spots. The ruin city is of an area about 5 sqkm.
Sigiriya
Built by king Kashyapa as a fortress on top of the rock Sigiriya which is about 200m above 0.Belongs to the 5thcentuary AD. The fortress is decorated as a palace in heaven with more than 500 frescoes. Only 18 original frescoes can be seen today. The huge mirror wall with numerous ancient graffiti, water gardens enhance the beauty of the fortress.
NuwaraEliya
Known as the old English city and the city above clouds.Situated about 1984 m above sea level. Temperature ranges from 15- 20`C in day time and 7`-10`C in the evening. Ancient colonial buildings are present. Famous for cultivation of European food crops.Famous tourist area.
Tea- Was introduced to Sri Lanka by a British person named Mr. James Taylor in 1840. The famous high grown tea plantations are done in an area centering NuwaraEliya.
Beautiful eye catching waterfalls can be seen amongst these estates. It is possible to learn all about history, cultivation and industrial preparation of tea from an old tea factory.
Adam’s peak
One of the highest mountains in Sri Lanka situated in the middle of the hill country. In ancient times this was the main landmark of the naval route from Europe to China known as the Silk Route. Adam’s peak is one of the most sacred places for Sri Lankans as the Buddha’s foot print was believed to be set on this. This is worshipped by millions of pilgrims in a season from December full moon to April full moon. But this also is very famous among hikers worldwide that throughout the year they can be seen there. The sun rise in the morning to the peak is a very attractive incident that all the tourists wish to see.
Sinharaja rain forest
A world famous tropical evergreen rain forest which is also declared as a world heritage.Area- 11,117 hectares.Annual rainfall is about 2500-4000 mm. A very high bio diversity can be seen. Layered appearance of vegetation is distinct forming canopy layers. Consist of many varieties of mammals, birds. Reptiles, amphibians& various endemis species.
Mahiyangana
Around 80 km away from Kandy towards East. This is the main city of Sri Lankan aboregeins also known as Vaddhas. Their culture, traditions, rituals and life style can be studied by visiting their village.
National parks- Yala, Udawalawa
About 14% of Sri Lanka’s land area is forestry and nature reserves. Among these the major national parks are Yala&Udawalawa. Saffari are arranged in order to observe this wildlife. The most attractive species are the elephants, Sri Lankan leopards, bears, crocodiles and more than 450 varieties of birds which can be seen throughout the year.
Galle
The capital city of southern Sri Lanka.An ancient coastal colonial city. Consist of a fortress made by Dutch (1684) known as Galle fort today which is the one of the most famous forts in the island. Galle fort is also a major tourist attracting spot. Galle has one of the most beautiful sea beaches in the world where stick fishermen also can be seen.
Bentota Site Seeing
- Turtle hatchery- places on Southern coastal area of the island near Bentota where conservation of turtles is done under the World animal conserving projects.
- Fish market (Beruwala)- Many varieties of deep sea fish can be seen such as Tuna, Shark, Herrings
- Boat trip in river Benota- A very mind blowing boat trip for a duration of about 1hr to 8 hrs. Mangrove vegetation, some birds and crocodiles can be observed.
- Bava’s gardens- *Brief garden | *Lunuganga garden
Belong to 2 brothers named Major Bevis Bava and Captain Jeffry Bava who were British military members during the 2nd world war. Attractive landscape can be seen.
